GAVAN Celebrates Twenty Years of Operation;

September 2008 marks a significant month / year for the GAVAN Group as the company mark twenty years of service to the shipping / intermodal industry. Originally formed in 1988 by founding Directors Mr. Gavin Condon and Mr. Andy Corstorphine, both of whom worked in the New Zealand transport industry and shipping industry for many years before founding GAVAN, the company was formed to supply container parts and accessories to the New Zealand container repair industry. Due to the success of the company in New Zealand and with exports to Australia growing the decision was made in 1992 to form an Australian branch of the company and Gavin Condon moved to Sydney to head the Australian company while Andy Corstorphine remained in Auckland to manage the New Zealand operation, Our Australian company now operate from office / warehouse locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, “We are the largest intermodal supplier in Australia” said Mr. Paul Wilson, General Manager of Australia.

In 1998 the GAVAN Company was instrumental in forming the Intermodal Equipment Alliance (IEA) which is a purchasing and Information Company consisting of three international supply companies, one based in Europe, one in the United States and the GAVAN Group covering Australasia and Asia. This alliance has now become the single largest supplier of container parts around the world.

In 2002 a decision was made to enter the South East Asian market and Singapore was chosen as the Headquarters of GAVAN Asia, due to its geographical location and importance in global shipping. Our present General Manager Mr. Bob Tan joined the company at this time.  The GAVAN Asian operation has now expanded to include Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia and recently we have opened a branch in China.

2002 was also the year that the Directors of GAVAN decided to launch “Secure A Load” a brand of transport related securing and lashing equipment in New Zealand and Australia. This brand of products has proven very successful for the group not only in Truck transportation but also for lashing and protecting cargo in shipping containers, “We are very pleased with the success of the Secure A Load product range” said New Zealand General Manager Mr. Glenn Green, “We have a Cargo Care division which is heavily involved in ensuring that cargo arrives at its destination in the best possible condition. To achieve this we have a range of moisture control products, Container liners, space savers, dunnage bags and lashing systems as well as a number of other products available from two locations in the North Island and one in the South Island. We are well positioned to react to urgent orders” he said.

Our Defense division in Australia have supplied lashing equipment for many years to the Australian Defence force. Mr. Paul Wilson, General Manger for Australia also noted, “We have four locations in Australia which means we can supply interstate customers in a matter of hours, “we are a service driven company” he stated “I have been with the company in excess of ten years and every year we are getting busier” he said. “Our Secure A Load transport products are now purchased by most leading Interstate and local transport companies, because we offer not only truck winches and web tie downs but you can purchase chain lashing systems, lifting slings and lifting products from Secure A Load. Because of Secure A Loads success in Australia and New Zealand, we are now in discussions with the Singapore National Safety Council who are endeavoring to review and develop tighter transport securing polices for the Island of Singapore”.

The GAVAN ship lashing division headquarters is based in Singapore where the company can react quickly to dispatch twistlocks, Turn buckles and other associated ship lashing materials to most locations throughout the GAVAN Group, “We hold most our bulk stock in Singapore” said Mr. Bob Tan, “But most of our branches in the group also hold smaller common use products, so if a vessel is in urgent need of equipment delays are kept to a minimum” he said.

“Through the past twenty years the GAVAN group has gone from strength to strength, from a two man operation in 1988 to a staff level in excess of a hundred people, operating from fifteen locations in seven countries. The company has now become the largest geographical intermodal parts supplier in the world and are currently number two in the world by volume, we have come a long way and our future looks bright, We could not have enjoyed the success that we have without the full support of our customers and our staff to whom we sincerely wish to thank” said Mr. Condon

GAVAN Holdings the world largest geographic supplier of Intermodal marine repair products and member of the C.O.A and I.E.A have recently expanded their Thailand presents by establishing a new warehouse and office at the port of Laem Chabang.

The opening of the new branch was attended by customers, interested parties and nine local Monks who presided over the official blessing of the office and warehouse.

This will increase our Thailand operation to three locations said Managing Director Mr. Gavin Condon. We have received great support from our Thai customer base since establishing our first branch here in 2005 and it is very encouraging that most Thailand container repair facilities are now meeting international repair standards in regard to materials used in container repairs. The port of Laem Chabang is the largest port in Thailand and has becoming an important location for shipping lines servicing Thailand. It is important that Shipping lines and Leasing companies that are using Thailand as a repair hub, or for any in service repair, have access to correct materials and it is our intention to offer container repair facilities in Thailand the same first class products and services we offer from all our operations Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore. We are continuing to expand our container parts distribution throughout South East Asia.

GAVAN Products Asian Headquarters based in Singapore is headed by Mr. Bob Tan We very pleased with the performance of our Thailand operation, who with the support of our local Manager Mr. Mitr Manasuksakul has been able to service the requirements of our Thailand customers in both Bangkok and Laem Chabang. We have further plans to open our next GAVAN branch in Penang, Malaysia which will open next month. This will enable our Penang customers the ability to have repair materials available to them on a daily basis as apposed to waiting for product to be transported from K/L, this will increase our Malaysian operation to two locations.

Of interest to the shipping industry is the change to our Ship Lashing business. We have entered an agreement with T & T Container Lashing Company to supply their wide range of marine lashing equipment through all GAVAN locations, with special emphasis on the port of Singapore where major stocks will be held and available for immediate delivery to vessels requiring ship lashing products from our Tuas warehouse.

T & T Container Lashing manufacture product to Germanischer Lloyd, Bureau Veritas, Lloyds Register to name but a few. The high quality of product, affordable price and central location make the T & T brand of ship lashing a logical choice for ship operators. Smaller quantities will be held in all of our other GAVAN locations but as Singapore is the largest transshipment port, the level of demand for this type of equipment will be greater.

Mr. Condon stated that the GAVAN Group is focused on increasing office and warehouse locations through out South East Asia as the level of demand and support from our customers has increased over the past few years. GAVAN ensuring quality and professionalism through the support of our customers

GAVAN Products Establishes New Branch In Thailand

International ISO parts supplier GAVAN Products have expanded their Asian operation, recently establishing a new branch in Bangkok, Thailand.

The new joint venture company between GAVAN Products and Viboon Enterprise called GAVAN Products (Thailand) Ltd has been established to supply approved ISO container parts and accessories to the Thailand container repair industry.

Mr. Gavin Condon (left) Mr. Viboon (right)

Mr. Gavin Condon a Director of the GAVAN Group of companies stated, We are very pleased that we now have an operation with skilled and enthusiastic staff in this important area of Asia, We are the first ISO parts supply company in Thailand that will offer only approved parts to the repair industry. We have been asked by repair companies and Leasing companies to supply correct materials to this region, which in the past have been impossible to obtain. We are also aware that by offering only approved parts we expect resistance from suppliers who for years have supplied incorrect materials.

GAVAN Container Products is a member of the Container Owners Association (COA) and Mr. Andy Corstorphine from GAVAN recently attended the meeting of the (COA) in Amsterdam where the subject of improper repairs was discussed. The cost of improper repairs is of growing concern to both Shipping Lines and Leasing companies

GAVAN estimate that improper repairs add approximately 15% annually to the maintenance and repair cost of a shipping line, with lines having to complete repairs a second time (at their cost) to correct the improper repair.

In many cases improper repairs are completed with incorrect materials such as mild steel used instead of Corten-A or equivalent grade steel, replacement plywood used with no treatment certificates, batch numbers or strength test certificates, incorrect grade aluminum and incorrect decal material to name but a few parts.

It has also been noted that in some extreme cases independent surveyors have been shown ISO approved parts but incorrect material has been used to affect the actual repair.

It is GAVAN's stated aim to have a network of owned offices and agents throughout Asia enabling the shipping industry to obtain the correct materials in every major port in the region. GAVAN expect to open a full service container parts operation in Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines over the next 18 months. GAVAN is working with major suppliers such as CIMC, Maersk Container Industries, Fort Vale Engineering and Chugoku Marine Paints, sourcing the correct materials and ensuring the correct specified plywood from Indonesia and have been able to develop production points for a number of hard to source reefer body parts.

As a founding member of the Intermodal Equipment Alliance ( IEA) , GAVAN works with Van Doorn Container Parts Bv and Martec international Inc to provide a worldwide container parts supply chain. IEA members also supply ship lashing equipment . security seals of all types, and are the worldwide suppliers of the Secure-A-Load brand of road and rail transport tie down products.

Mr. Gavin Condon at the opening of GAVAN Products Thailand stated that Now the container repair industry in Thailand has come of age, the Thailand container repair industry is more than capable of completing professional repairs required by container owners world wide.

Changing Face for Parts Company

Multinational Intermodal parts supply company GAVAN Container Products Pty Ltd have changed their name to GAVAN Products Pty Ltd, Managing Director Mr. Gavin Condon stated that GAVAN is no longer just a container spare parts supplier, We now have eight operations in three countries and a number of agents working for us throughout Asia. Our name change is to reflect our diversification as we have expanded from container spare parts supply company to now supplying cargo care products, road and rail transport securing products and Defence lashing and securing systems.

GAVAN Products have operated in Australia since 1992 and supply almost every container repair facility in Australia and New Zealand. GAVAN first supplied the New Zealand container market in 1985 where there was a requirement for correct materials for the repair of ISO containers. Three years ago they expanded the network of GAVAN companies to Singapore, which is the Headquarters of GAVAN's Asian operation, where they supply not only South East Asia but South Africa, Korea and Japan with Container parts equipment.

To head the Australian operation Mr. Adam Miers of GAVAN's Brisbane Branch has been appointed to the position of General Manager. We are delighted that Adam has accepted the position of General Manager, said Mr. Condon. Adam has been with the company for a number of years and his experience in Cargo Care products are invaluable for the future growth of this important division of the company

Our aim in cargo care is to supply solutions to cargo packing problems and poor outturns for cargoes packed in containers, we have a range of moisture control products for humidity sensitive cargos such as spices, flour, electronic products in fact any cargo traveling through the equator is prone to container rain and moisture damage, with the rising cost of insurance premiums some exporters are now searching for ways to ensure that their cargo is better protected at the time of packing. Inflatable Dunnage bags and cargo barriers are used to protect cargoes from movement in containers, allot of manufactures and exporters are growing tiered of poor outturns as it reflects badly on their products and organization. We are here to offer cost effective and practical solutions, which can be controlled and installed by the manufacturer or exporters own staff.

No other Australian company has such an extensive range of cargo care products available ex store in so many states through out Australia. I am looking forward to the role of General Manager and steering GAVAN Australia into the next faze of Containerisation in Australia.
